چکیده

The experiments described by H. E. Rowe and C. E. Muehe. Jr. in previous Quarterly Progress Reports had to do with the noise characteristics of magnetically focused electron beams. Although the experiments were conducted with vacua of less than 10-6 mm Hg. the long drift tube insured almost complete neutralization of the electron beam by positive ions. Thus. it was never possible, for example. to achieve true Brillouin focusing. We decided to repeat the measurements, using a pulsed electron beam. With a pulse duration of 106 sec, a pressure of 2 X 107 mm Hg, a drift length of 40 cm, and with the assumption that no loss of ions occurs, the ion concentration at the end of the pulse would only amount to about 1 percent of the electron density. The apparatus used is that built by Muehe for his experiments. It has been modified by adding a motor drive to move the cavity smoothly along the beam, as shown in Fig. VII-I.

“This paper had its origins in a summer of 1956 project to build 1,420 mc low noise traveling wave tubes for use as preamplifiers in the Caltech radio telescope. The tubes that I built had measured noise figures that were much worse than the predicted theoretical minimum of six db. I used the standard low noise tube design formulae, which had been previously demonstrated to result in tubes that...

Intense Reb Transport in a Weakly Magnetized Plasma*

Intense relativistic electron beams (REBs) have been used in various applications for the purpose of high-power microwave (HPM) generation. By injecting the beam into a plasma, it is possible to overcome the space-charge limiting current because of charge and current neutralization provided by the plasma. Our goal in this experiment was to study beam transport issues which may be relevant to th...

Initial Experimental Studies of Electron Accumulation in a Heavy-ion Beam*

Accelerators for heavy-ion inertial fusion energy (HIF) have an economic incentive to fit beam tubes tightly to beams, putting them at risk from electron clouds produced by emission of electrons and gas from walls. Theory and PIC simulations suggest that the electrons will be radially trapped in the ≥1 kV ion-beam potential. We are beginning studies on the High-Current Experiment (HCX) with uni...

The secondary positron beams produced by linear electron accelerators are used in scattering experiments with stationary targets, in electron-positron colliding beam experiments, and in the production of annihilation photon beams : they now approach primary electron beams in their energy, intensity, and range of application. (To be published in physics Today) Work supported by the U.S. Atomic E...
